One day at an exhibition of masks, Beethoven returned to the life of Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. The writer recalled that he had been passionate about him in his adolescence.
Why did Beethoven withdraw? Why does today's man no longer experience the same emotions, the same romanticism and private storms, the same joy? Who has died? Beethoven or us? And who is the assassin?
Schmitt's essay is followed by Kiki van Beethoven, the story of a radiant woman in her sixties whose life, and the life of her three friends, is changed by music. A fable about lost youth and buried secrets.

"My name is Saad Saad, which means Hope Hope in Arabic..." Saad wants to leave the chaos of Baghdad for Europe, freedom and a future. But how do you cross borders without a dinar to call your own? How, like Ulysses, do you brave the storms, survive shipwrecks, evade the opium smugglers, turn a deaf ear to the sirens-turned-rock stars, escape the cruelty of a Cyclopean jailer, or tear yourself away from the amorous enchantment of a Sicilian Calypso? By turns violent, slapstick and tragic, Saad's one-way journey begins. From adventures to tribulations interspersed with conversations with a loving father he can't forget, the novel tells of the exodus of one of the millions of men currently in search of a place on earth: a stowaway. Always a captivating and sympathetic story-teller, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt offers this picaresque saga for our time and questions the human condition. Are borders the bulwark of our identities, or the last bastion of our illusions? |

Concerto in Memory of an Angel |
 |
What has a woman who poisons her husbands one after the other to do with an amorous President of the Republic? What is the link between a sailor and an international crook selling religious souvenirs made in China? By what miracle does Saint Rita, patron saint of desperate causes, become the mysterious guide of their lives? All these heroes might have made amends and chosen light over darkness. Each of them was once offered redemption. Some of them accepted, others refused, a few didn't even notice. In this collection, four stories interweave. Four stories that trace the ordinary and the extraordinary of every life. Four stories that explore the question: are we free or do we all have a fate? Can we change? Concerto in Memory of an Angel is followed by the diary Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt kept while he wrote the collection.
On sale from 4th March. The title came second on the list of best-sellers (source LivresHebdo). |
